Hair transplantation is the scientifically proven way to permanently restore hair

Hair transplantation is the only scientifically proven way to permanently restore hair to thinning or bald areas. When you have hair transplanted from the back and sides of your scalp to your balding areas, your hair will begin growing, and can keep growing, throughout your life.

In general, age or sex is not a limiting factor for hair transplantation. However, very young patients may be preferably managed conservatively. The ideal candidate for hair restoration surgery has healthy hair on the sides and back of the head — the areas from which grafts are taken (they are genetically programmed to grow for life).

Scalp reduction surgery involves surgical removal of bald areas and advancing the hair-bearing areas of scalp together. Many a time this technique is referred to as advanced flap surgery. In this procedure, the sections of hair-bearing scalp is advanced or pulled forward to fill the bald crown. It is used in covering back, and top of the head but is of no use in concealing front hairline. This method involves the injection of local anesthesia to the scalp and then the bald scalp segment is removed. The pattern of the section that is to be removed depends on the patient’s goal and need.

For the patients who desire dramatic changes Tissue expansion, Flaps and Scalp reduction are considered appropriate. Those who wish a modest change are recommended hair transplantation techniques such as mini-graft, punch grafts, slit graft, strip graft and micrograft.

Good candidate for hair transplantation

  • Well-defined male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness.
  • Greater density of dark or curly hair.
  • Wish to restore or thicken eyebrows, mustaches or beards.
  • Hair loss from scarring, scalp injuries or cosmetic surgery procedures.

A Hair transplant is a strategy wherein a Plastic Surgeon moves hair to an uncovered zone of the head. The specialist generally moves hair from the back or side of the head to the front or top of the head. The back of the scalp is used as the donor area as this area is not affected by the androgens and the hair of this area are usually permanent till the age of 60-65 years.

Broadly, there are two main methods of Hair Transplant. FUT( Follicle Unit Transplant or Strip Method) and FUE ( Follicle Unit Extraction). In FUT a strip of 1-2 cm width X 10-15 cm long is harvested from the back of the scalp. The donor area is closed with absorbable sutures and the resulting scar becomes almost invisible due to the downward direction of hair growth. Then the single follicle unit wide pieces are cut from the strip. The process is called Slivering. This is followed by Cutting out of grafts under Magnified Vision. A graft is a group of hair follicles bound together with common connective tissue. There can be 1-5 hair follicles in a graft. The donor area is prepared to receive the grafts by the process called slitting with the help of needles or blades. Whole procedure is done under Local Anesthesia.

With the advent of FUE, which involves harvesting grafts directly from the scalp with the help of Motorised Micro Punches and the need of an Incision and a resulting scar, the FUT Method is going out of favour at rapid pace. The only specific indication of the FUT Method is the requirement of very high number of grafts as in Grade V- VII Male Pattern Baldness, wherein both methods are used together to increase the graft yield.

The procedure is done in painless manner under Local Anesthesia. Patient goes home shortly after the procedure.

Precautions Before Hair Transplant

  • Stop smoking a week before the procedure.
  • Avoid Vit E supplements and Excessive Garlic intake from about 10 days prior to surgery.
  • Wash your hair with a regular shampoo on the day of hair transplant. Avoid use of any hair gel, spray other lotion.
